Dragonflies & Damselflies
of the Outer Hebrides

Ten species have been recorded on the islands, of which seven are common and widely distributed. The Golden-ringed Dragonfly and the Emerald Damselfly are both very scarce, whilst the record of the Azure-winged Dragonfly on Lewis has not been confirmed.

The Odonata is divided into two suborders: Anisoptera (Dragonflies which rest with the wings outstretched) and Zygoptera (Damselflies which fold the wings).
